KUALA LUMPUR – A joint operation led by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been launched against errant motorcyclists nationwide in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.

“We conduct this operation every festive season when traffic is at its peak,” JPJ deputy director general (operations) Datuk Wan Ahmad Huzir Wan Sulaiman

“The reason we focus on motorcycles is because at least 60% of fatal accidents nationwide involved motorcyclists and pillion riders,” he told reporters when met at the Duke Highway toll plaza on Wednesday (Feb 14).

He said a total of 1,065 motorcycles were checked during the operation which began at 8pm.

“Of these motorcyclists, we took action against 197 of them for 355 violations.

“The violations included no road tax (179), no licence (139), no side mirror (three), and fancy number plates (19),” he said.

He added that four men and one woman were detained by the National Anti-Drug Agency for suspected drug abuse.

“The Immigration Department also detained four foreigners for not having valid documents while the Department of Environment also took action against three motorcycles for emissions violations ,” he said. – The Star Online
