MOHD Zamri Baba showed rivals he means business as the seasoned contender topped the CP130 opening practice despite an early crash in Round 2 of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship at Stadium Batu Kawan, Penang on Saturday.
The Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing rider fumbled midway through the 15-minute practice in the attempt to surpass PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor duo, Abdul Muhaimin Roslan and Ahmad Fazli Sham who were leading the timesheets at that time.
Fortunately he did not sustain any injuries or extensive damages to his Honda and a quick pit-in saw the engineers swiftly fix the bike and within minutes he was back on track.
Zamri clocked the quickest lap in 53.254s in the final two minutes of the session and his junior, Mohd Hafiz Nor Azman made things sweeter for SCK as the premiere class rookie posted the next best effort in 53.394s.
Muhaimin who led most parts of the CP130 practice dropped down to third with 53.404s while Norizman Ismail came in fourth and Temerloh winner, Fazli Sham was fifth with 53.413s and 53.429s respectively.
“I am pleased with today’s results and it feels good to carry forward the momentum we had in the first leg,†said Zamri who finished second in Temerloh.
“Of course it would have been better without the crash but it was unavoidable as the airbag bounced onto my racing line when Taufiq Roslan crashed into it. Fortunately, we escaped without any injuries. I’m just a bit sad my new racing suit got damaged,†he added.
Speaking about his expectations for Sunday’s SuperPole and Final race tomorrow, Zamri commented, “I am really thirsty for a victory so that will be my aim tomorrow. However, it wont be easy because the Yamaha teams are lightning fast here. In that sense I will need to form a strong strategy with my teammates and hopefully, with the support of my fans I can end my victory drought and increase chances of fighting for this year’s championship.â€
Meanwhile Tengku Amirul Haffiruddin proved he was the man to beat as the Motul Yamaha YY Pang rider dominated the CP115 practice.
Tengku Amirul who claimed victory in the opening round at Temerloh last month posted the fastest lap in 54.523s to become the only rider to dip his time under 55 seconds.
Second quickest in the intermediate class was PETRONAS Yamaha CKJ’s Ahmad Syukran Aizat with 55’362s while PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor’s Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin came in third, clocking his quickest lap in 55.397s.
Reigning CP115 champion and Tengku Amirul’s teammate, Mohd Izzat Zaidi Salehan registered at the lower end of the timesheets having suffered a crash that saw him limping back to the paddock.
In the age-capped WIRA class, Harith Farhan Baharin of Kozi Yam Honda Racing appeared fastest in 55.426s followed by teammate, Saiful Azhary bin Mohamed with 55.856s. Rounding up the top three was Espada William Racing’s Amirul Hakim Rizal with 56.238s.
