BERA – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants the UMNO party leadership at all levels to resolve internal problems faced to ensure the party continues to govern the country in future.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO vice president, said they needed to take a lesson from the country as well as world history that witnessed many powers such as Russia, the Netherlands, Fraance and the Melaka Malay Sultanate Empire itself fell due to internal woes.
He said even UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) had ever lost power in Perak, Terengganu and Kelantan merely due to internal unrest as a result of dissatisfaction with the leadership.
“Enough … learn from the experience of the world, resolve internal problems. Do not entertain feelings of anger and disappointment among us. Enough with what happened .
“We do not want it to happen again in UMNO and BN political because the price is too costly that we have to bear when we lost power. Leaders have their weakness because they are not infallible, so we give and take,” he said when officiating the Bera UMNO division delegates meeting here today.
The event was also attended by Pahang Umno Liaison Committee chairman, who is also Pahang Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, deputy Umno liaison chairman Datuk Seri Sharkar Shamsuddinn and Bera Umno division chief Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ahmad Zahid reminded party members to avoid being too complacent with the power that they currently held.
“Our problem is when we have the power, we feel that we will have the power forever. Like in Pahang, a state that we respect because they can still maintain a two-third majority vote.
“Terengganu which garnered a slim majority vote was fighting, old and new leaders quarrel, resolve these problems, all this will only bring about downfall …want to fight wait until after the elections.
“We have to remember the history of Kelantan that has been ruled by PAS for over 23 years. Previously Kelantan was ours, but due to internal problems, supposedly many weakness and shortcomings…want to teach a lesson for one term only and in the end we have been unable to wrest the state back until now,” he said.
He said efforts to retain power not only involved the leadership of the state but also needed to start from the lower branches, polling districts (PDM), divisions and the state liaisons.
“If a branch head quarrels with the branch deputy, if the Youth leader fights with the Puteri head, then we must worry about being taken over by others when polling districts fight with each other, how can we continue to remain in power.
“Party life expectancy of 10 years will have a crisis, but if our competitiveness and fighting spirit is high, all the problems we face will be overcome successfully,” he said.
He said the party machinery should also frequently go to the ground to further strengthen the people’s confidence in UMNO, particularly among the younger people. – BERNAMA
