KOTA KINABALU- Umno has reinstated the monthly allocations for its divisions and wings which were halted in early May as they are unable to be self-reliant, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno vice president, who is carrying out the president’s duties, said that this would take immediate affect.
He said that many divisions and wings at grassroots level were unable to carry out their various functions without funding.
Speaking to reporters at the Sabah Umno Hari Raya gathering here on Wednesday (June 26), Zahid said that the decision to stop the funding via a circular from the party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was aimed at asking the divisions to help self-finance their operations.
He said such funding was channelled previously by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who resigned as party president following the May 9 election defeat.
“Now I am acting president, I will continue the funding,” he said.
However, Zahid denied that the restarting of allocations had anything to do with the current party elections, where he is contesting for the presidency.
On a question of whether the party aimed to reclaim the RM116.7 mil cash confiscated from properties linked to the former prime minister, Zahid only replied; “we will let the rule of law take its course.”
Umno had earlier claimed that the seized money comprised party funds for the elections.- The Star Online
