BAGAN DATOH – On this bright Saturday morning, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who returned to his constituency here, took the opportunity to have breakfast and spend time with the local residents.
Despite the tight schedule of the Deputy Prime Minister, he still accepted the invitation of his close Chinese friend, Beng Song Wan, 53, to have breakfast at his home in Taman Desa Bersatu, Simpang Empat here.
Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datoh, arrived at 9.30 am with several State Exco members and spent about 30 minutes to savour the delicacies prepared.
Among the menu were boiled tapioca, ‘sambal bilis’, nasi lemak, chicken ‘rendang’, ‘soto’ and ‘pecal’.
At the same time, Zahid chatted with members of Beng’s family including his mother, Cheah Seoh Lian, 75.
When met by reporters, Beng said he had sent a message to Zahid via the short messaging service (SMS) while he was in Beijing, China two days ago inviting the Deputy Prime Minister to have breakfast together.
“I did not expect Datuk Seri to reply ‘saya setuju’ (I agree) and I immediately made the necessary preparation,” he said.
The father of two, who is known by the name of ‘Bujang’ among his close friends, said he and Zahid had been friends for the past 25 years.
“Every Chinese New Year Datuk Seri would come to my gas shop and the last time he came to my house was two years ago when he was still the Defence Minister,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid also spent time to mingle with about 100 people who were present before proceeding to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Khir Johari in Sungai Sumun to attend the launching of the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the school. – BERNAMA
