Zahid Advises Mubarak Members To Register Young People As Voters

in Latest

KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today advised members of the Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives to get young people to register as voters.

He said the Mubarak members should also explain to young people the plans the government had for the country and the people.

Young people, especially first-time voters, were always looking for something new and wanted to know the direction that the government was heading to, he said.

“They want to forget history and things nostalgic … for these to remain only as a memory. Mubarak members have an important role to play in endearing themselves to these young people and explaining to them the importance of history and the government’s direction and plans,” he added.

Ahmad Zahid spoke at the ground-breaking for the construction of the Wisma Mubarak building in Jalan Sentul here.

Also present was Mubarak president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman.

Ahmad Zahid said Mubarak members should use their experience as one-time elected representatives to provide clear explanations to young people.

He said they should not feel they were being sidelined as they were still needed by society.

“Those entering the golden years will certainly be sensitive, especially those who are 70, 80 or 90 years old. For those in their 90s, they will always be nostalgic, thinking that they are the best.

“I am not referring to anyone in particular, dead or alive. When you have no post and position, just remain silent and do not disturb those who have come after you,” he said in apparent reference to the current political scenario of splits in political parties and the sowing of hatred towards the current leadership.

The deputy prime minister said the government would continue to provide aid to former elected representatives facing financial problems and such, including those from opposition parties, because the government was fair to all.

Ahmad Zahid said he would also bring up soon to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Mubarak’s request for financial assistance to put up Wisma Mubarak. – BERNAMA
