JOHOR BAHRU – A group of cycling youths who were detained by police for racing along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam near the Mahmoodiah Muslim Cemetery here early today do not seem to have learnt from the tragedy in February.

This was the same location where eight teenagers died while doing the same thing on Feb 18.

Voicing his disappointment over the situation, Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh said a number of those detained this morning had witnessed the accident.

He said the youths who were detained comprised 20 male teenagers and two female, aged between 14 and 17.

Sulaiman told reporters at the Traffic Division office of Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Headquarters that of these, 14 were cycling while the rest watched.

“They were all detained when our personnel conducted patrols in the area at 3am. They were moving in a group of 30 to 40 and were racing,” he said.

“They do not seem to have learnt from what happened, their parents don’t seem to play their part in controlling their activities,” Sulaiman said.

He added that police would not hesitate to take action against parents who were negligent in controlling their children. – BERNAMA
