PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has sarcastically agreed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that he is behind the “crisis” in Malaysia.
“I will admit that I am behind the ‘crisis’. I am behind it because there is a climate of fear in this country,” said the former prime minister in a cynical post on his blog, chedet.cc, Thursday.
Dr Mahathir said the crisis was caused by him speaking up on behalf of people who had approached him to do something about the losses incurred by Government investment arm, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
“So they come to tell me. And they ask me to ‘do something’. For a long time I desisted because I know if I reveal the wrongdoings of 1MDB, it will lead to the Prime Minister being questioned.
“I had tried to do it privately. But there was no result. I told the Prime Minister I no longer supported him. No result. So I had to go public,” he said.
He added that he had to go public on the matter so Barisan would remain as the ruling party in the next general election.
“The whole country will see turmoil as no party will have the majority to run the country.
“The Opposition cannot because they would be quarrelling among themselves. A Pakatan government would be weak and unstable.
“Without a strong government, this country would become anarchic. The crisis that would accompany the anarchic situation would be worse,” he said.
Dr Mahathir placed the blame for the “crisis” on Najib instead.
“Is there a crisis? There is.
“The crisis can be ended immediately if the Prime Minister resigns and allows a full investigation to be made on the RM42bil borrowed by 1MDB,” he said.
He added that if no crimes were detected and all the money returned, Najib could come back as prime minister and lead Barisan in the next election.
“By accusing me of being responsible for the crisis, Najib is saying let us accept the disappearance of the billions of Ringgit and behave as if nothing wrong has been done.
“The matter cannot just be ignored. The people responsible must be investigated and if found guilty, they must be punished,” said Dr Mahathir.
