THE X Factor auditions have been cancelled after the death of Simon Cowell’s mum Julie. Contestants were set to sing in front of the judges for the first round in Manchester on Monday but the auditions will now no longer go ahead, a spokesman for Syco Entertainment has confirmed.
They said: “They were due to start tomorrow and carry on into Tuesday and Wednesday. Tomorrow’s have been cancelled and we have not made any decisions beyond that.”
ITV bosses also confirmed the news to The Sun newspaper, leaving the new judging line-up, including Rita Ora, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, waiting to hear for news.
A show source told the publication: “Everyone at X Factor is devastated for Simon and there was no suggestion that filming would go ahead.”
Julie, a former dancer, reportedly died of a stroke and had spent time in a hospital in London recently, a family source told the paper.
Mrs Cowell was the mother of four boys – Nicholas, Simon, Tony and Michael, and step-mother to John and June.
A spokesman for them confirmed that Mrs Cowell died today, aged 89.
They said: “Today our beloved mum Julie passed away. Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was. We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.
“We would like to thank the media for kindly respecting Julie’s privacy throughout and we politely request continued privacy for the entire family at this particularly difficult time.”
Julie’s son Tony tweeted this evening: “Very sad night tonight. We will all miss Mum so very much. She was the heart and soul of our family x”
Simon’s close friend Sinitta, who knew Simon’s mum well, also posted: “Dearest beloved friend died today, so lost without her, but the finest, happiest memories and lessons remain of my Beautiful Mother-Look.”
Former X Factor winner Sam Bailey wrote to Simon on Twitter: “@SimonCowell so sorry to hear your mum has sadly passed away x heaven has gained another angel x.”
Simon was close to his mother and she was reportedly pleased to have seen him settle down with girlfriend Lauren Silverman, who gave birth to his first son, Eric, in February last year. – Mirror
