KUALA LUMPUR – The International Petanque Federation (FIPJP) has described the Petanque Arena in the Ulu Pudu Recreational Park, Cheras, which is expected to be fully completed in June, as a world-class court.

Its president, Claude Azema, said the indoor court developed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which has 24 lanes as well as eight outdoor lanes, was of the type normally used in world-class competition.

“I am really impressed, mesmerised. Malaysia has shown its seriousness to raise the standard of Petanque with such a high quality venue. I have been informed that the SEA Games is the first major championships to be held here, which will be a huge boost for the sports.

” I feel that with this advantage, Malaysia will win medals, regardless of their colours,” said Azema in a statement issued via the Kuala Lumpur 2017 (SEA Games) official website.

Azema was also present to witness the pre-SEA Games Petanque events at the venue with Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong.

Malaysian Petanque Federation (PPM) honorary secretary Cheah Ban Cheng also thanked DBKL for providing a Petanque court for the SEA Games.

“The condition is very comfortable in wet and hot weather but we also need seating and other facilities to host the sports for SEA Games.

” I am confident all these will be settled soon as the venue is still in the process of improvement. Apart from that, the car park is spacious and should not be a problem,” said Cheah.

Meanwhile, Zolkples said the venue was the first Petanque facility in the country and hoped that the association would put it to full use to improve the standard of national Petanque squad.

“Now that we have a world-class venue, I hope PPM will make full use of it. It is important for our athletes to train here more often and adapt themselves to the environment to get the feel of the venue,” Zolkples said.

Seven gold medals will be up for grabs in Petanque at the SEA Games, in the singles (men’s and women’s), doubles (men’s and women’s), trio (men’s and women’s as well as mixed team). – BERNAMA
