KOTA KINABALU – Construction of the Ulu Padas hydro-dam project, estimated to cost between RM1.2 billion and RM1.4 billion, is expected to begin, the latest, by January next year, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said Saturday.
He said the project, to generate power and for flood mitigation purpose, would be capable of generating electricity supply of up to 180MW.
The dam would help to alleviate flood problem in Beaufort, he said.
He said the project, scheduled to be ready in five to six years, was a long term plan project to meet the state’s power need after 2020.
“A joint-venture company has been approved to implement the project,” he told reporters after a breaking of fast hosted by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) here Friday.
On the location of the proposed project, he said, a site in the concession area of the Sabah Forest Industries (SFI) had been identified for the purpose.
