Woman Pleads Not Guilty To Causing Death Of Police Officer And Wife

BALING – An unemployed woman pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of driving under the influence of drug and causing the death of a police officer and his wife in a road crash last April 18.

Yeoh Chiew Fern, 36, made the plea after charge was read out before Magistrate Mohd Izmi Ibrahim.

She was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating drug and caused the death of Baling Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department head Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38, and wife, Suriya Ab Rahman, 37, in Kampung Telok Teduri, Jalan Baru Kupang-Baling near here, at 7.15am last April 18.

The charge, under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides an imprisonment of up to 10 years and fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000, if found guilty.

Legal officer at the Baling district office Inspector Harlina Othman, who prosecuted, did not offer bail.

However, the court set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and also ordered for Yeoh’s driving licence to be suspended pending the disposal of the case.

The court also fixed May 30 for mention to allow Yeoh to engage a lawyer and for submission of documents. — Bernama
