KUALA LUMPUR – A kindergarten owner was fined RM8,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for operating an illegal child care centre last year.
Magistrate Wong Chai Sia handed down the sentence on Yow Shu Huei, 51, after she pleaded guilty to the charge and ordered her to serve a six-month jail term if she failed to pay the fine. She paid the fine.
The woman was charged with running an unregistered kindergarten called Taska Cerdik Kreatif at Platinum Lake Condo, Jalan Danau Saujana, Taman Danau Kota, Setapak here at 10am on June 5, 2017.
The charge framed under Section 6(1) of the Child Care Centre Act 1984 punishable under Section 6 (2) of the same Act carries a fine of up to RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to two years or both.
Earlier, Yow who was unrepresented appealed for a lesser fine as she had tried but failed to obtain approval from the authorities due to problems with documentation.
Welfare department prosecuting officer Eny Edayu Mat Ali urged the court to impose a punitive sentence as an indication that the court would not tolerate those who operate unregistered child care centres.
She added that it was important for child care centres to be registered to safeguard the safety, wellbeing and welfare of children. – BERNAMA
