KUALA LUMPUR: The national men’s sepak takraw squad kicks off their title defence at 2015 International Sepak Takraw Federation (Istaf) Super Series in Gunsan City, South Korea after securing a convincing victory in two preliminary round matches.
The Malaysian trio represented by Zuleffendi Sumar (feeder/pengumpan); Mohd Zamree Mohd Dahan (striker) and Sahidan Ali (server) disposed off minnows, China with a 21-8 and 21-19 victory in just 39 minutes in the Group B opening game in the morning session at Wolmyeong Arena.
Abdul Talib Ahmad’s boys showcased another sizzling display after defeating Myanmar 21-14 and 21-15 in the second match, later, in the live telecast match through Istaf website; www.sepaktakraw.org.
Following yesterday’s victory, Malaysia almost assure a place in the knock-out stage on Saturday.
They will wraps up their preliminary match against neighbours Singapore, today.
For the record, the national men’s sepak takraw squad created an upset after defeating favourite, Thailand to lift their inaugural Istaf Super Series 2014/15 title in Melaka on last February.
The national women’s trio comprises of Siti Norzubaidah Che Wahab (tekong), Nor Farhana Ismail (feeder) and Elly Syahira Rosli (striker), on the other hand, lost 19-21 and 9-21 to hosts, South Korea in the Group A opening match.
They will face an uphill task against favourite and defending champion, Thailand in their last preliminary match, today.
Based on tournament format, the top two teams of each group will advance into the knock-out stage while the teams that have been eliminated will go into 5th – 8th place play-off matches to determine their rankings in the tournament.
