Wildlife Director Pleads Not Guilty To Stealing Rhino Horn

JOHOR BAHRU – The Johor Wildlife and Natural Parks Department (Perhilitan) director was charged in the Sessions Court here today, with theft of a century-old rhinoceros horn.

Yusof Shariff, 46, pleaded not guilty to stealing the horn belonging to the Johor Royal Museum last October.

He was charged with taking the horn which was in the front of the museum at the Sultan Ibrahim Building, without permission on Oct 19 at 2.30pm.

Yusof, who was transferred to Johor from Terengganu in August this year, was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to seven years or fine, or both, upon conviction.

Judge Datuk Zainal Abidin Kamarudin allowed bail of RM5,000 in one surety.

Yusof is required to report to the Johor Jaya police station every month, as well as surrender his passport to the court.

The judge also fixed Jan 31 for re-mention of the case and for the relevant documents to be surrendered.

Yusof was represented by counsel Datuk Hanif Hassan while Rahimah Abdul Majid was deputy public prosecutor.

The accused was arrested three days ago (Dec 25) when he surrendered at the Johor Baharu Selatan district police headquarters near here at 9pm. – BERNAMA
