NIBONG TEBAL: A 21-year-old youth was shot dead and another arrested following a dramatic 10km car chase during which several police vehicles were rammed.
One of the police patrol cars overturned after it was hit by the multi-purpose vehicle driven by the youth.
OCPD Supt Shafee Abd Samat said the chase started when a police patrol unit spotted the black MPV with two youths inside acting suspiciously at about 5am yesterday.
“The policemen approached the driver and instructed him to turn off the engine and step out but he immediately reversed his vehicle and sped off.
“While fleeing, the youth rammed his vehicle into the police car and headed towards Jalan Kerian Kedah,” he said.
Supt Shafee added that the patrol unit called for backup and continued to chase the MPV along Jalan Seruling Emas.
“Upon reaching a petrol kiosk in Sungai Bakap, another police car tried to block the MPV but the driver rammed into it and the chase continued along Jalan Besar.
“The driver attempted to make a turn in front of a house but was blocked by a police car which was rammed twice. On his way out, he found himself blocked by more police cars.
“A policeman opened fire twice at the MPV’s tyres but the driver continued to ram the police vehicles.
“Three more shots were fired at the MPV before the youth lost control and crashed into a drain,” he said in a statement.
Supt Shafee said the driver died at the scene after being shot while the passenger, 26, who sustained light injuries, was arrested.
He added that a parang and 0.5gm of syabu were found in the vehicle.
“Our checks show the two have criminal records for offences under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act. We are currently investigating the case as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he said.
