Video Of Dad Showing ‘Fake’ Eggs Sold In Child’s School Canteen Goes Viral

After giving Malaysians a scare in September last year, a video clip on fake eggs is making the rounds on social media again.

The Oct 28 recording of a man examining sandwiches his daughter bought from a school in Kuala Lumpur surfaced on Facebook and YouTube early this month.

The texture of the bull’s eye egg, he claimed, was like plastic and the mashed hard-boiled eggs were rubbery and bouncy.

The narrated clip shows a man’s hand poking the eggs and moulding the yolk into a ball before bouncing it on the table.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry enforcement director Mohd Roslan Mahyudin said the claim would be probed although the details in the post were sketchy.

“Anyone with information should come to us. Let us know where it’s being sold. Better yet, give us the sample. We have branches nationwide,” he said.

The sample would be sent for lab analysis and to the Health Ministry and Veterinary Services Department, he added.

In last year’s video clip, a woman who boiled eggs bought from a supermarket in the Klang Valley found the yolk texture to be rubbery.

The Consumers Association of Penang had since 2011 alleged that fake eggs were being sold in the market.

Mohd Roslan said 26 fake egg complaints had been received since 2011, but no such eggs were found.

Action could be taken under the Trade Description Act 2011 if the case was false, he added.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all complaints and issues on food safety were probed and action taken.

“Continuous monitoring and enforcement activities in the domestic market and at entry points nationwide are being carried out,” he said.
