ALOR SETAR – The Veterinary Services Department has been urged to give briefings to livestock rearers on management of their animals during floods.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said 600,000 animals died after they were trapped in the floods last year without adequate food, and drank contaminated water as their owners did not release them.
“The animals could have sought a safe place and this could have lessened the number that perished in the floods.
“Those animals which found their way to high grounds could be given adequate food and (some of) them could also be slaughtered and their meat distributed to the flood relief centres,” he told the media last night.
He said this after a dinner function to mark the 40th anniversary of MADA Corp.
He said livestock rearers must also update themselves on the weather situation to ensure that they were more prepared for any eventuality like the flood. – BERNAMA
