Van Driver Pleads Not Guilty To Transporting Smuggled Cigarettes

KUALA TERENGGANU – A van driver pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, here, today to a charge of transporting contraband cigarettes worth RM60,000, last week.

The man, Boo Gaik Kung, 39, is accused of committing the offence at the Kuala Terengganu toll plaza, East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), Kampung Gemuruh, near here, at 1.20am on Nov 3.

The 3,750 cartons containing 750,000 sticks of cigarettes of the Astro brand were transported in a Toyota Hiace van.

The accused, who is from Kuantan and unrepresented by counsel, was charged under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 and the offence is punishable under Section 135(1)(iii)(aa) of the same act.

If found guilty, he faces a fine of not less than 10 times and not more than 20 times the value of the contraband item or a jail term, or both.

Magistrate Abdul Hayyi Salim set Dec 8 for case remention and allowed the accused bail of RM40,000 in one surety.- BERNAMA
