KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) will be setting up an Onn Jaafar Chair to focus on peace and unity studies.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the establishment of the chair is in line with the aspiration of the government in the face of various threats as well as new challenges currrently.
He said UPNM today decided to set up the chair, expected to be implemented soon.
“The establishment of the research chair is timely as the nation is facing various tests including the rapid development of social media which could change the landscape of the world,” he said.
Hishammuddin was speaking to reporters at the launch of the Peace and Unity Campaign by UPNM students at Sungai Besi Premier Camp, here Tuesday.
According to him, the research chair did not mean national unity was getting critical, in fact it is another step to foster solidarity according to the present needs using a new approach.
“As we have been informed, peace in the country did not come about by accident.
“In fact it requires us to constantly persevere and not to allow current issues affect what we have inherited,” he said.
He said at the same time, the findings of new formula and documentation by the chair will strengthen peace and unity in the country.
Meanwhile, Hishammuddin is confident the decision of Wisma Putra to call the Ambassador of China, Dr Huang Huikang to clear the air on his statements, which appeared to be intefering in Malaysia’s domestic affairs, would not affect the bilateral relations between the two countries.
“What is important is the effort to ensure Malaysia and China ties continues to grow and strengthen,” he said.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman in a statement yesterday said the Ambassador of China was called to Wisma Putra to clarify his statements made during his visit to Jalan Petaling.
