UNSC Vote Shows Global Opposition To US Recognition Of Jerusalem

KUALA LUMPUR – The 14 to 1 vote during the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) emergency meeting on United States (US) recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel indicates clear international opposition to the move.

Wisma Putra in a statement tonight said Malaysia also expressed its disappointment over the veto by the US on the draft resolution that was proposed by Egypt during the UNSC meeting on Monday.

“Malaysia reiterates that the issue of Jerusalem is at the core of the Palestinian cause and calls on all Member States of the United Nations not to recognise any attempt to alter the character and status of Jerusalem.

“Malaysia welcomes the initiative by Turkey to call for a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Emergency Special Session to deliberate on this issue, with a view to tabling a similar resolution, ?it said.

US President Donald Trump on Dec 6 declared that the US recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and ordered to move the US embassy to the disputed holy city. This has infuriated the Palestinians and other Muslims across the world.
