BAGAN DATOH: Malaysia should serve as an example of a modern Islamic country that practises moderation, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“We could be at the forefront, compared with other countries.
“We also want to return to the true teachings of Islam and unite everyone in its name,†he said during the closing of a Quranic verse reading ceremony at Wisma Umno Bagan Datoh yester-day.
He added that all Muslims should put aside their political differences and work together for the betterment of the country and its people.
He said the people have the same goals, which was to create a peaceful and prosperous nation, and should be united to achieve it.
“We all have a common goal, we want a peaceful and prosperous country.
“We may have different political understanding and we should keep this aside for our country,†he said at the event organised by the Wanita Umno wing here.
“Let this transcend politics and we could also have people from PAS or Amanah join us. Let us start it here in Bagan Datoh,†he said.
Later yesterday, Dr Ahmad Zahid presented zakat at two functions in Rungkup and Hutan Melintang.
The aid was sponsored by the Naza Group of Companies and Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owner Associations in conjunction with the Ramadan month.
Some 1,051 underprivileged and needy folk here received the zakat.
In his speech, Dr Ahmad Zahid said it was the responsibility of the people to help the needy.
He said that wealth owned by the people was not totally theirs and a small part belonged to the asnaf (hardcore poor).
“When we receive some income, we need to give some to the poor.
“I also always remind myself, God will reward us 700 times the contributed amount if we help those in need,†he said.
The people also received a hamper containing essential goods and foodstuff during both the programmes.
