GEORGE TOWN – More than 1,000 Penang UMNO Youth members gathered and marched to Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak today, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over the corruption charges he faces.
National UMNO Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun claimed that the gathering was to demonstrate solidarity of youths in rejecting the DAP leadership in Penang.
“Lim is no longer qualified to be the chief minister because he is facing corruption charges and has lost credibility,” he told reporters after handing over a memorandum on the matter to a representative of the chief minister at Komtar.
Lim had pleaded not guilty in the High Court to two charges related to the purchase of a bungalow at below market price and improper change of state land use last year.
Participants of the ‘Himpunan Pemuda Bangkit’ demonstration, attired in black shirts, began gathering at the Penang UMNO building at about 1.30pm and marched to Komtar.
They dispersed peacefully an hour later on the orders of the police.
Khairul Azwan said the memorandum also contained several demands, including calling on the state government to build more low-cost houses; address allegedly uncontrolled development and cease land reclamation.
He also said that similar demonstrations would be held, anywhere and at any time, until Lim stepped down.
The memorandum, signed by the UMNO Youth heads of all the Penang UMNO divisions, was handed over to the Information Officer at the Chief Minister’s Office, Zahar Zainul. – BERNAMA
