KUALA LUMPUR – The number of new registrations of UMNO members was extraordinarily high when 3,000 people joined the party within a period of one week at the end of March.
UMNO executive secretary Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said usually only about 200 to 300 people registered as members within a period of one week.
What was of interest was that all the people who registered comprised the young generation aged below 30, he said.
“A random survey that we carried out showed that they loved UMNO and the Barisan Nasional (BN) and supported the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the reason for joining the party,” he told reporters after chairing the coordination meeting for the 71st UMNO anniversary celebrations at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here today.
He added that this reflected the awareness that began to crop up among the young generation to be together with UMNO which had contributed considerably in the development of the country and the people.
He said that UMNO had so far recorded a membership of 3.5 million with 1.3 million members of the Wanita UMNO movement, 600,000 (Youth), 380,000 (Puteri) and the rest were ordinary party members.
In another development, Ab Rauf expressed his regret over the publication of a caricature which was considered to be insulting to Islam in a Chinese daily last Saturday.
“Although the newspaper concerned had apologised, such a thing should not have happened, they must remember the boundary in publishing a newspaper,” he said.
Yesterday, the newspaper issued a notice of apology to Dewan Rakyat president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on the publication of the caricature. – BERNAMA
