GERIK – Umno which is the backbone of the government needs new thinking and courage to act firmly in order to remain relevant in this information commmunication technology (ICT) era, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Umno deputy president said party members must be in tune with the explosion of ICT whereby those who are in sync with it are more mature, more vocal and knew better on human and democratic rights unlike before.
“So how do we keep Umno relevant, still the choice of the people, even though pioneered by the Malays but able to champion the welfare of all Malaysians,” he said when opening Lenggong Umno’s delegates meeting at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Gerik here today.
He said bringing development and providing infrastructure facilties as was being done by Umno was not the end all to continue commanding the support of the people.
“It is not the only answer to secure the people’s support, because there are many other things we have to do in the business of administering the country, there must be justice, transparency, in line with demands, basic human rights and various other things. Although we have provided all kinds of facilities, this is not the answer to them (to support Umno),” he said.
Muhyiddin said it was no longer business as usual and the expectations of the “new Malays” and the people at large in terms of principles, rights, equality and justice among others was much more demanding.
As such, he issued Umno members a challenge, to think on how the party could have the “wow” factor to bring about a new level of support from the people Umno.
This had to be done fast because the next general election was less that four years away, he said. – BERNAMA
