KUBANG PASU – Umno vice- president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal wants the party to be continually strengthened to ensure it is the sole forum in the struggle of the Malays.
Shafie, who is also the Umno Election Committee chairman, said efforts to improve the party membership should be stepped up, in addition to ensuring that party members registered to vote in the general election.
“Instill in Umno members that the party is the best for the Malays in Malaysia, and ensure they support and vote Barisan Nasional (BN),” he said when opening the Jerlun UMNO division delegates meeting here, Satuirday.
He said some Umno members refused to vote for BN merely because they were not picked as general election candidates or they failed to obtain projects, and such problems must be tackled, he said.
According to Shafie, the Umno Training Bureau must be mobilised to strengthen the confidence of the members in preparation for facing the general election.
Also present was Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, who is also Kedah Umno Liaison Committee chairman and Jerlun Umno division chief.
Meanwhile in BENTONG, Pahang, Shafie said Umno leaders must listen to and evaluate the voice of the grassroots if the party was to win in the next general election.
He said the two factors, namely the trust and confidence of the people must also be given serious attention and should not be taken for granted by party leaders.
“The challenge in the 14th General Election requires us to study and listen to the voice of the grassroots because we are closely linked to them.
“We are the people’s representatives, we cannot win if the rakyat do not support us. Without the confidence and trust of the people, we cannot hold on to power,” he said.
He disclosed this in his speech when opening the Bentong Umno division delegates meeting.
Also present were Pahang Menteri Besar and Bentong Umno division head Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and a representative of the Pahang Umno Liaison Body, Datuk Seri Shahiruddin Ab Moin who is also the Raub UMNO division head. – BERNAMA
