KUALA LUMPUR – UMNO members should continue supporting and respecting the party’s top leadership if they want the party to remain strong, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO vice-president, said UMNO members should not also offer different opinion about the party leadership to the extent of being detrimental to the party.
“We should give our support to the existing leadership,” he told a press conference after opening the 2015 National Consumers Day celebration in Dataran Merdeka here today.
Ahmad Zahid was commenting on the statement by UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a forum in Johor Baharu yesterday about leadership transition at the party and country levels which had taken place before.
Muhyiddin, among others, was reported as saying that he had once rejected Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposal to replace Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as the prime minister following the dismal performance of Barisan Nasional in the 2008 general election.
While saying that he respected Muhyiddin’s view and feeling, Ahmad Zahid said it was better for the former deputy prime minister to ‘stop being nostalgic and face the reality’.
When asked about the demand by a group of Telok Kemang UMNO division members, who claimed to represent 13 branches of the party, for party president to step down, Ahmad Zahid said the party leadership had yet to receive the memorandum on the matter.
“If we receive the memorandum, we will look into it,” he said. – BERNAMA
