KUALA LUMPUR – The whole process and the atmosphere at this year’s UMNO general assembly, scheduled to begin on Nov 29, should be able to promote a winning mentality among the delegates as a preparation to face the next general assembly.
UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the delegates should also make optimal use of the assembly by focusing their discussions on efforts to strengthen the party’s machinery and enhance member’s confidence.
“The most important thing for UMNO now is for the members to stay united, to be prepared for the next general election…I really hope that the atmosphere and the process of this year’s assembly will lead us to achieve that.”
He said this to reporters after chairing the UMNO Supreme Council Motion Preparation Committee meeting here today.
Meantime, Hishammuddin said despite being politically attacked by various quarters, with the latest being the Bersih 5 rally, UMNO had remained steadfast and unmovable.
Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, said there was no easy way to topple a government in this country as only the people can do so through the process of general election.
On Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s proposal for the post of acting UMNO deputy president to be enshrined in the party’s constitution, Hishammuddin said it would not be discussed at this year’s UMNO general assembly.
Instead, he said the matter would be discussed at the party’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM), which would probably be held next year.
On motions to be debated at the assembly, he said a total of 681 motions had been received and would be presented to the Supreme Council to be finalised.
The motions were categorised according to clusters, namely politics, economy, religion, social and education. – BERNAMA
