KLUANG – Umno is gathering views from the grassroots on core issues such as religion, race and monarchy for debate at the party’s annual general assembly next month.
Its vice-president, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the collation of views was imperative to prevent the issues from becoming polemic and causing racial disharmony in the country.
“The Umno Supreme Council has decided that I head the Resolutions and Spokesperson Committee and I am also the chairman of the Constitution and Legal Bureau.
“In connection with this, Umno, through the committee and bureau, is getting the views from the grassroots on these core issues to be brought to, and debated at the general assembly,” he said after attending the Deepavali Muafakat Johor open house here Sunday.
Hishammuddin, who is also defence minister, said the views of the grassroots were important in stating the party’s stand on national core issues, especially the Sedition Act, which were often discussed by the people.
He stressed that it had always been the tradition in Umno and Barisan Nasional to consider the views of the people, with a view to looking after their interests.
Hishammuddin said he would also use the Johor Umno Convention scheduled to take place in Johor Baharu early next month to be a medium to obtain feedback from the party’s grassroots. – BERNAMA
