JELI – UMNO has the strength to win electoral seats on its own without having to depend on a split in the opposition pact to do so, said UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
Mustapa, who is chairman of the Kelantan UMNO Liaison Committee, said UMNO could not afford to be complacent in the wake of a split in PAS whereby some PAS leaders have set up the Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) or New Hope Movement.
“A split in PAS does not mean that UMNO can relax and expect an easy victory in the next general election.
“We cannot be complacent but must continue to strengthen solidarity and remain loyal to the party leadership,” he said at the Aidilfitri open house at his residence in Darul Falah here today.
More than 10,000 people attended the open house that was held from 9 am to 4 pm.
Last Monday, several senior PAS leaders announced the formation of the GHB, seen likely to be a replacement for PAS in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact as PAS and DAP have gone separate ways. PKR is the third partner in the pact. – BERNAMA
