BUTTERWORTH – Two traffic police officers were injured in an accident near Jalan Arowana here while they were escorting Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was on a one-day working visit to Permatang Pauh.

Cpl Ramlan Ariffin, 52, and Zulkifli Md Desa, 48, were sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital near here for treatment.

The accident occurred at 9.50 am, causing all vehicles in the convoy to stop by the highway and Ahmad Zahid to get down from his car to help the two injured traffic police officers from the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) District Police Headquarters until an ambulance arrived.

SPT District Deputy Police Chief Supt Baharom Abu said the two police officers were part of a group of traffic policemen who were escorting Ahmad Zahid from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth to Wisma Tranformasi UMNO Permatang Pauh in Tanah Liat near here.

“When they arrived at the location, one of the outriders directed all traffic from the left lane to slow down and stop as the convoy was going to enter the lane to get to the Butterworth Kulim Expressway (BKE).

“However, a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle refused to slow down and stop but instead continued going fast, causing one of the outriders to swerve to avoid him,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Baharom said the motorcycle of the traffic policeman who tried to avoid the vehicle collided with another police motorcycle, causing both to fall.

He said the 4WD vehicle driven by a man did not stop, but instead picked up speed and left the scene.

“We did not get the registration number of the vehicle” he said, urging the public who had information on the incident and the 4WD vehicle to contact the nearest police station to help in the investigations.

Ahmad Zahid spent about 15 minutes visiting the traffic police officers at the Seberang Jaya Hospital after the Friday prayers.

Ramlan, when met by reporters at the hospital, said the incident did not curb his spirit to continue working during the coming Permatang Pauh by-election.

“I have no problems to continue working even though I have medical leave. I am really interested. But I am upset that my motorcycle has been so badly damaged,” he said.

Recounting the incident, Ramlan who was hurt in the face, shoulder and arm, said he was in the left lane entering Jalan Arowana while his colleague Zulkifli was in front of him.

“Suddenly a 4WD vehicle cut in from the front to go there.

“Zulkifli could not avoid on time, and I also could not avoid him and we collided. After that, I saw Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s convoy stopping and they helped us until the ambulance arrived,” he said, adding that Zulkifli broke his right ankle.

He said the incident was the first in his 10 years of service in the traffic unit. – BERNAMA
