KOTA BARU – Two soldiers were shot – believed to by smugglers – while they were out patrolling at Pos Machang in Tanah Merah, at the Malaysian-Thai border.

Kelantan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim said during the incident at 5.35pm on Tuesday, two soldiers, aged 29 and 26, were fired upon from 30m with a shotgun.

The 29-year-old soldier was hurt on both thighs while the 26-year-old was wounded on the left thigh.

“We will seek Thailand’s help to investigate the case.

“We have identified the suspects responsible for the shooting,” DCP Mazlan told a press conference at the police headquarters here yesterday.

The injured soldiers were from the 5th Border Regiment.

DCP Mazlan advised residents to stay away from the border areas for the moment for security reasons.

“We are not afraid of smugglers and will continue to patrol border areas to prevent smuggling activities,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

In Tumpat, 8th Infantry Brigade commander Brig-Jen Datuk Azmy Yahya said the incident would not discourage his men from patrolling the border to safeguard national security.

“The act of such cowards does not scare us but will make us stronger.

“A police report was made today (yesterday) and we will investigate the incident,” he added.
