JAKARTA: Two Malaysian students studying medicine and dentistry at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) were arrested for the possession of the Ecstasy drug.
The duo were arrested at 11.30 pm yesterday after they were believed to have bought the drug from a dealer in Kampung Kubur Jalan Airlangga in Medan.
Antara news agency quoted local police chief in Medan Baru, Roni Sidabutar as saying the two Malaysian students, both aged 24, were being detained at the police station for further investigation.
He said the police had earlier received information that a drug trafficking case was taking place in the village and had rushed to the area after the two men acted suspiciously.
Following the duo’s arrest, the police recovered several ecstasy pills in one of the men’s pockets and initial investigation revealed they had bought the drug at a price of Rp600,000 (about RM180).
Meanwhile Malaysian Education director in Indonesia Dr Juzhar Jusoh, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the incident and had contacted the Malaysian General Consulate in Medan to get further information.
He said the two students concerned studied in USU since 2010 and were in their final year.
