TANGKAK – Two fishermen are missing after their fishing boat was believed to
have been hit by a storm about 1.5 nautical miles from Pengkalan Nelayan
Kesang Laut, here.
Tangkak district police chief Supt Mohad Idris Samsuri said the two victims
namely Rizalman Baba, 42, and Johari Abu Bakar, 46, went fishing from the
jetty at about 11pm last night and should have returned at 8am.
He said they received reports of the missing victims at 1.45pm today before
the search and rescue operations (SAR) was launched immediately.
“The search today found the nets believed used by both victims, while the
fiberglass boat carrying two of them is still missing.
“Two other boats which went out separately with the victims last night have
returned safely to the jetty after realising the storm was coming.
“It is understood that the storm occurred at about 4am this morning,” he
told reporters when met at the Pengkalan Nelayan Kesang Laut jetty tonight.
Mohad Idris said the SAR operation involving the Malaysian Maritime
Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kuala Linggi, Muar Marine Operations Force (MOF),
six boats and three fishing boats was suspended at 7pm last night.
“Rescue operations today covered Kuala Sebatu waters up to Sungai Muar
estuary before it was suspended and will resume at 7am tomorrow with the
assistance of the Fire and Rescue department,” he said.
