KULIM – The tuna season is the reason why foreign fishing vessels are “salivating” to encroach into Malaysia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.
He said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) had been instructed to step up patrols in the EEZ and that the government would not compromise on encroachment by foreign fishermen into Malaysian waters.
“The Malaysian authorities will chase away foreign fishing vessels attempting to enter the area,” he said.
He advised local fishermen, especially in Sarawak, to take advantage of the season to increase their income.
Shahidan said this when met by Bernama after a meeting with Arau UMNO members here Sunday.
Yesterday, MMEA patrol boat KD Adil was slightly damaged when a foreign boat rammed into it while fleeing Malaysian waters.
The incident occurred at about 5.55pm in the South China Sea. – BERNAMA
