SUNGAI BESAR – UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein regarded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s action of sharing the stage with DAP and campaigning for the Parti Amanah Negara candidate at the Sungai Besar by-election (PRK) as not making sense.
He said the action of the former prime minister was also seen as inconsistent with his stand in not supporting DAP all these while.
“For me, Amanah is DAP and during my political career, I have not heard Tun Mahathir supporting DAP, but yesterday he was on the Amanah stage, denying the other opposition parties to support Amanah.
“Today, I understand he is in Kuala Kangsar (to campaign there) and if he is going to raise the same issue, like yesterday (in Sungai Besar) I feel many already knew,” he told reporters after visiting the Chinese Community in Kampung Baru Kian Sit, Sekinchan, here, today.
Yesterday, Tun Mahathir was in Sekinchan, here, and declared his support for the Amanah candidate at the Sungai Besar PKR, Azhar Abdul Shukur and used the DAP stage to campaign for the candidate.
Hishammuddin, who is also Minister of Defence, said Tun Mahathir’s direction was not clear with numerous statements which were more focused on attacking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
According to Hishammuddin, Dr Mahathir’s arguments would not influence the voters in Sungai Besar or Kuala Kangsar because the important matters to be decided were the future of the two areas.
Hishammuddin’s views were also shared by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Harun who said Dr Mahathir’s action was opposed to his principle which he held for 22 years when helming UMNO and Barisan Nasional.
He said Dr Mahathir stressed on loyalty to the leadership when heading UMNO but he was doing the opposite today.
“I wish to tell Tun Mahathir, he was strong at one time in the past, due to our support.
“So, as a young man, I wish to remind Tun M to stop doing work which we view as destroying what had been built all these while, enough is enough,” he said.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on his part, said Dr Mahathir could now be regarded as a member of the opposition, as such it is not necessary for any BN and UMNO member to defend the former prime minister.
“If we can attack Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng, if we can attack a Parti Keadilan Rakyat leader, Tun Mahathir’s position is now the same as theirs,” he added. – BERNAMA
