KOTA BHARU – A trader was shot at on his back after he refused to hand over his Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle to robbers during a carjacking incident in Jalan Sri Cemerlang here today.
Kelantan deputy police chief Datuk Din Ahmad said the 45-year-old victim, from Ipoh, arrived at the scene for lunch at a nearby restaurant when the incident occurred at 1.40 pm.
“The victim was approached by two men, in their 20s, on a motorcycle when he alighted from his 4WD before the duo asked him to hand over the vehicle key.
“As the victim refused to oblige, one of the suspects pulled out a pistol and fired at the left side of the victim’s back from close range,” he told reporters at the scene here.
Din said subsequently, the victim managed to run to safety and asked help from passers-by, while the suspects fled the scene on the motorcycle.
The man was taken to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here and reported to be in stable condition, he said.
Din said based on the modus operandi and targeted vehicles, police believed that the suspects were from the same group that had been involved in carjacking incidents here.
The case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, he added. – BERNAMA
