KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia will have mountain to climb in the Sudirman Cup competition scheduled from May 10-17 in Dongguan, China, after being drawn in the same group as South Korea and India.
According to the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) official website www.bwfbadminton.org, Malaysia were drawn in Group 1D with three times winner South Korea and India.
Malaysia’s best ever finish in the Sudirman Cup competition was joint-third with Indonesia after losing in the semifinals of the 2009 edition hosted by China in Guangzhou.
The mixed team competition will see participation from 35 counties that will be divided into four Groups comprising three or four teams.
Meanwhile, defending champion and nine times winner China are not expected to face any hurdles in the group stage after being drawn against Germany and Thailand in Group 1A.
China has won the title in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Thomas Cup champion Japan are also expected to have an easy passage in Group 1B after drawing Taiwan and United States while Denmark face Indonesia and England in Group 1C.
