But do not be fooled, the union was not the most expensive and controversial. Here’s the countdown to the most opulent and jaw-droppingly excessive wedding ceremonies of local celebrities. You’re invited!
1.The Most Anticipated Wedding Of 2006:Â Datuk Siti Nurhaliza & Datuk Khalid Mohamed Jiwa (21-08-2006)
First hinting a marriage is definitely on the way, Siti made it public that she had a special someone in her 2005 Anugerah Bintang Popular speech.
“This is a gift to all my supporters; a big thanks to my peers and my significant other,” she beamed. A year later, fans across the nation waited with bated breath as Malaysia’s sweetheart walked down the aisle with multimillionaire entrepreneur Datuk Khalid Mohamed Jiwa or affectionately known as Datuk K.
Long before the pair made a lifetime pledge of commitment to each other, their romance received a lot of public scrutiny following their 20-year age gap and the fact that Datuk K already had a wife and four, strapping boys at home. Then-27-year-old Siti announced their marriage plans in a press conference attended by some 250-strong media practitioners and photographers, at The Zon hotel,Ampang,Kuala Lumpur.
Putting the naysayers at their rightful place, eight years on, the couple is still happily married and are frequent fixtures in the local social scene, but had yet to produce little bundles of joy themselves.
The songstress’ powerhouse vocals was the stuff of legends, and she was famously linked to be the sole reason Azwan Ali turned out into whatever he is today. (Cue: blue lipstick, mad hair, feather boas.) Yes, urban legend has it that Ziana got Azwan’s heart shattered into a million pieces when she tied the knot with a MAS flight steward Armin Zaharin in her parents’ Subang home.
A supposedly intimate affair, the wedding details were leaked by sneaky reporters. Poor Ziana ended up finding 15,000 fans ‘gatecrashing’ her big day! Fortunately there was enough food for everyone as Ziana’s quick-witted dad Pak Zain ordered two lorries-worth of nasi minyak (rice cooked in compound butter) and everybody left the premise happy.

The event was attended by 10,000 of their fans and was held at Taman Tasik Permaisuri, Bandar Tun Razak,Kuala Lumpur. To top off the ‘wow’ factor, the couple utilized the number 3 as a theme of their wedding: starting with the solemnization ceremony on 15-03-03, a dowry of RM33,333.33, the groom’s entourage of 33, and a call time at 3.30 p.m.
