KOTA KINABALU: A three-year-old boy living in the suburban Menggatal area here died of diphtheria, the third case in the country in June.
Sabah Health Department director Dr Christina Rundi said that the child, who was not immunised, was from the migrant community.
However, she said that this isolated case of diphtheria and did not indicate an outbreak of the disease.
“There is a death due to diphtheria, but this is a sporadic case and not ‘wabak’ (outbreak) as in the viral message.
“We do have sporadic cases of diphtheria in the state,” she said in referring to a viral WhatsApp message spreading after the death of a child on Monday.
Two children have died from diphtheria in Malacca and Kedah earlier this month, with 11 cases reported.
The states’ Health Departments are continuously monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautionary measures when needed.
