NEW DELHI – Three female medical students were found dead in a farm well, near their college in the town of Villupuram, Tamil Nadu in south India.
The incident has shocked the country which is on its final preparations for the Republic Day celebration on Tuesday.
Local media reported that police recovered a suicide note which allegedly blamed harassment by the college management for their action.
The incident came within days of another suicide incident involving a Phd student who had left a suicide note over his suspension and four others by the university authorities in Hyderabad, Telangana, following a fight with another group of students.
In the latest incident in Villupuram, NDTV news channel reported quoting the girls’ family members that the college management had harassed the students after the girls complained on poor basic amenities.
The college is located about 200 km from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.
According to a recent study on suicide by the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 800,000 people committed suicide worldwide and nearly 17 per cent of the cases were reported in India. – BERNAMA
