PATTANI – A riot by a group of inmates in Pattani Prison yesterday killed three
of them and injured seven others, including the prison staff.
Pattani police chief Major-General Thanongsak Wangsupa said the riot broke
out at about 4.30 pm (local time) when the inmates set fire and damage part of
the prison building.
“The motive for the riot is believed due to dissatisfaction of the inmates
over the strict control and inspection to curb smuggling of drug into the
prison,” he told reporters here.
He said the body of one of the inmates killed in the incident was thrown
into the burning part of the prison and efforts were being made by authorities
to identify the victim.
Additional security members were deployed to the prison and the riot,
involving between 300 and 400 inmates, ended at about 2 am (local time),” he
added. – Bernama
