MELAKA – Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) today handed over RM1,487,795.46 in business zakat for 2014 to the Melaka Zakat Centre (PZM).

TH Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Johan Abdullah said the zakat contribution was 6.5 per cent or RM90,832.86 higher than the RM1,396,962.60 for 2013.

He said Melaka is the fifth state, after Johor, Penang, Sabah and Negeri Sembilan, to which TH has contributed business zakat this year.

“TH’s total business zakat for 2014 was RM49.87 million compared to RM46.29 million in 2013,” he said in a statement here today at the presentation of a total of RM2.16 million in business zakat by 11 agencies and companies.

Besides TH, the zakat contributors were Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd, Pembangunan Pertanian Melaka Sdn Bhd, Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Melaka (PKNM), RA Talang Enterprise, MIDF Property Bhd, Koperasi Pekerja-pekerja Melayu Melaka Bhd, Perbadanan Melaka Holdings Sdn Bhd, PM Media & Event Sdn Bhd and PM Corporate Services Sdn Bhd.

Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob received the zakat on behalf of PZM at a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

Johan said besides contributing zakat to zakat collection centres nationwide, TH also hands over zakat to eligible groups through its corporate responsibility programmes nationwide throughout the year.

PZM General Manager Azmi Hussain said the centre collected RM9.98 million in property zakat between January and yesterday, a 12 per cent or RM1.67 million increase over the RM8.31 million collected in the same period last year.

He said the number of zakat contributors for the period rose by 8,806 people or about 57 per cent to 24,132 from 15,326 in the same period last year, while zakat on earnings rose to RM4.97 million from RM3.37 million previously.

The Melaka Islamic Religious Council distributed RM58 million in zakat to eight eligible groups statewide last year, he added. – BERNAMA
