MALACCA: Thrice, they knocked on the doors of unsuspecting victims to ask for help, but then stormed into the houses brandishing machetes to rob the occupants.
But the fourth time proved to be their undoing as the armed gang of five, led by a teenage husband-and-wife team, fell into a police dragnet while attempting another robbery.
Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt SamporÂnak Ismail said in the first three cases, the victims were senior citizens and foreign workers in MerliÂmau town.
He said the modus operandi of the newlywed couple, aged 16 and 17, was to knock on the doors of their targets on the pretext of asking for help.
“Once the victims let them into their homes, the couple would signal three accomplices who would storm in with machetes,†he said, adding that in all the cases, the victims were tied up and their homes ransacked.
A special team codenamed Ops Couple was set up to track the gang, which had been active since January.
The couple were caught while attempting to stage another robbery on May 4 at a workers’ hostel in Serkam here.
