Tamil Nadu Acting Governor, New Chief Minister Call On Najib

CHENNAI – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today met Tamil Nadu acting Governor, Vidyasagar Rao and the state’s newly appointed Chief Minister, Edappadi Palaniswami as he began a six-day official visit to India.

The meeting was held at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor, located at the central town of Chennai.

Najib, who arrived at the residence at 6.30pm, (local time) received a warm welcome from South Indian state leaders before adjourning to a close-door meeting with the accompanying delegation for about 30 minutes.

Also joining the meeting were Special envoy on Infrastructure to India and South Asia, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr.Subramaniam, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, High Commissioner of Malaysia to India, Datuk
Hidayat Abdul Hamid and Consul General Malaysia in Chennai Ahmad Fajarazam Abdul Hamid.

Rao who is the Governor of Maharashtra was sworn-in as the acting Governor of Tamil Nadu last September, as the tenure of K Rosaiah as the Governor ended on August 30.

A lawyer by profession, Rao, 76, is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Telangana and has served as the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and subsequently as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry from 1999 to 2004.

Meanwhile, Palaniswami or nicknamed EPS (acronym if Edappadi Palaniswami) was sworn-in as the 13th and current chief minister on Feb 16, this year.

An agriculturalist by nature, Palaniswani, 63, is a senior leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Najib and the Malaysian entourage was later accorded an official dinner hosted by Rao at the Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan. – BERNAMA
