in Sports/Top News

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s challenge in the US$700,000 (RM2.33 million) China Open Premier Super Series ended tamely as the sole representative Chong Wei Feng (pic) lost to Sho Sasaki of Japan at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center, China.

Wei Feng lost 26-24, 21-23, 6-21 in a match that lasted 79 minutes, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.org.

The defeat came as surprise since Wei Feng had overcome the fifth seed Son Wan Ho from South Korea 21-14, 22-20 in the opening round Wednesday.

Wednesday, men’s doubles pair Hoon Thien How/Tan Wee Kiong lost to Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa 15-21, 21-18, 15-21.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia did not send players to compete in the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. – Bernama
