KUCHING – Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem paid tribute to Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud who is celebrating his 78th birthday today.
Adenan said the state developed steadfastly under Taib’s leadership, when the latter was the chief minister.
Describing Taib as a leader ahead of him time, Adenan said, Sarawak has recorded various achievement in all areas of development including physical, economic and social aspects.
“Before 1980, Sarawak was still under developed and its economy was largely dependent on agriculture, forestry and mining.
“The state’s socio-economic landscape started to change with increased development momentum when our Head of the State became the chief minister in 1981.
“The progress has benefitted the rakyat staying in the urban or the rural areas,” Adenan said in his speech at a parade held in conjunction with Taib’s birthday celebration in Padang Merdeka here.
Also present at the grandeur event was the Head of State’s wife Toh Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi.
More than 4,000 people flooded the event which was held to celebrate Taib’s first birthday celebration as the Head of the State.
A total of 117 contingents representing various federal and state government agencies took part in the parade, which began at 8am. – NST Online
