Mawi

BANGI – Singer Asmawi Ani who is more popularly known as Mawi, is grateful for the informal education he picked up living in Felda Taib Andak, Kulai, Johor, which has helped him succeed in life.

The winner of television reality show Akademi Fantasia 2005 said the guidance of his late father Ani Ahmad as well as his experience with the Malaysian Feldia Youth Council had helped him attain success in all the fields he had participated.

”My father also reminded me to always be grateful because only then will we feel adequate,” said Mawi, 35.

His success in the local entertainment world had proven that a Felda child could create a name for himself with humility and talent.

In an interview conducted in conjunction with the Ekspresi Felda Negaraku Malaysia programme to be held from July 21 to 23, Mawi said he would always remember his father telling him to collect the oil palm seeds which had dropped off the bunches so that they could be sold “as this is all money”.

“With this sense of gratitude ingrained in me at an early age, I am very grateful for everything,” he said.

With its theme of “Sow Deeds, Reap Results” , the three-day programme  in conjunction with the 2017 National Felda Settlers Day, would be held at the Dataran Persiaran Perdana, Presint 3, Putrajaya. An estimated 50,000 visitors are expected to join in the celebrations.

Recalling his younger days in Felda Taib Andak, Mawi who is known for his song “Kalah Dalam Menang” said the guidance and motivation he gained from the youth association played important roles in his life.

“Felda Youth has many activities including motivational courses for Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) students,” he said.

One experience he never forgot was when, at the age of 12 years, he was punished in a motivational course with being left alone in a graveyard at 1am.

The winner of Berita Harian’s Most Popular Star for three consecutive years from 2005 to 2007, Mawi said the graveyard experience made him a braver person, ready to take on any challenge life threw him.

The fifth of six siblings, Mawi who now lives in Bandar Baru Bangi, said he would always be grateful to being brought up as a second-generation Felda child.

Urging Felda youths to always be grateful, work hard and have a mission and focus in life, Mawi said: “The younger Felda generation must know how to grab opportunities and not be easily influenced by negative stories about Felda.”

Besides his career as a singer and actor, Mawi said he had started a production company, Mawi World Entertainment, while with his wife Ekin, the father of one had set up a boutique in Bandar Baru Bangi to generate more income. – BERNAMA
