Maine’s state fire marshal says a man burned down his parents’ house and killed three pets while trying to exterminate ants in his basement with matches.
Investigators say 21-year-old Devon Doucette was trying to incinerate the ants with wooden matches when one of them ignited combustible materials. The fire quickly spread to the rest of the house.
Authorities say Doucette was treated for smoke inhalation and burns after he carried some burning items out of the house. They say the house is owned by his parents, who were not home at the time.
Authorities say the fire killed two cats and one dog. They say charges are not likely. – Fox
THE horrific moment a man was shot and killed was caught on camera as he live streamed footage to Facebook , police said.
Antonio Perkins, 28, was found face down with gunshot wounds to the neck and head on Wednesday night in a vacant lot on Chicago’s west side.
Perkins was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Facebook Live video appears to show Perkins recording himself and a group of people in front of a row of homes before someone opened fire.
The phone appears to tumble through bloody grass before going black. The audio continues with bystanders screaming and crying.
On Friday, police identified the man in the video as Perkins, who they said was a documented gang member.
No arrests have been made.
The video remains on Facebook with a user warning message about its graphic nature.
A spokeswoman from Facebook acknowledged the video posting, saying it does not violate company policy. The social media site will remove a video if it celebrates or glorifies violence, she said.
The shooting comes just days after a double murder in France in which the killer later took to Facebook Live to encourage more violence.
A 25-year-old man killed a French police commander and the commander’s partner on Tuesday.
He then took to the social media site with a 12-minute video encouraging followers to kill prison staff, police officials, journalists and lawmakers.
The incidents underscore the immense challenges companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Google’s YouTube face as they push live video streaming to hundreds of millions of people.
Facebook in recent months has made its Live feature – which allows anyone to broadcast a video in real time – a central component of its strategy.
It allows people to stream from their smartphone.
Chicago, the third-largest US city, has drawn attention due to its gun violence, which police have blamed largely on gang violence and a proliferation of stolen guns.
There were nearly 500 homicides last year, and gun violence is up in 2016, police say. – Daily Mirror
JENNIFER Garner reportedly wants her good friends Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel to help her find a new man following her split from husband Ben Affleck earlier this year.
The ‘Alias’ actress who was pictured with a mystery man in Malibu last week is ready to start dating again following her split from husband Ben Affleck earlier this summer and has asked her famous pals to help seek out suitable guys to pair her with.
The 43 year old star who has kids Violet, nine, Seraphina, six, and Samuel, three, with Ben has even told her pals she’d like to settle down and have more kids in the future.
“The therapy she and Ben had really helped Jennifer move on emotionally from Ben and heal her heartache. She no longer feels negative about marriage and has told pals she can imagine falling in love again and settling down. She’d happily have more children too,” said a source. – Bernama
LONDON – A transgender woman who was born a man has been sent to an all male prison sparking fears for her safety.
Tara Hudson, 26, has lived as a female all of her adult life and undergone six years of gender reconstruction surgery.
The make-up artist was jailed for 12 weeks after admitting an assault during an incident in a bar last Christmas.
But magistrates ruled Tara should serve her sentence inside a Category-B male prison because her passport says she is still a man.
Her mum condemned the move saying even doctors have confirmed she is now a woman .
Tara’s mum Jackie Brooklyn has written to the prison governor as she fears her daughter will be targeted by the male prisoners.
She said: “There’s nothing male about her, nobody would know the difference. She looks like a woman. She’s gorgeous.
“We think it’s totally outrageous. I don’t think she will cope well at all.
“I just feel the men are going to go after her. It’s going to be humiliating.
“I just want to get my daughter into a safe, female environment where she belongs and will continue to fight the decision.â€
Tara, who was born Aaron, admitted assault after an incident at a bar on Boxing Day 2014.
She changed her plea to guilty in September and her mum was expecting her to be put on an electronic tag and made to undergo an alcohol awareness course.
At worst she thought she would be sent to an all-women prison by the magistrates in Bath, Somerset.
But instead she was ordered to serve her time at HMP Bristol – a Cat-B prison holding around 600 young adult and adult men.
Last year prison inspectors reported that levels of violence had “risen sharply†in the jail and said not “enough was being done to protect some vulnerable prisonersâ€.
The report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons said incidents of violence “were now considerably higher than in similar prisonsâ€.
Jackie revealed that Tara, who has 34EE breasts, is on a hormone replacement course and is due to undergo more surgery in the future.
She added: “She’s been through a hard time and this could set her right back.
“I don’t think the magistrates have taken that into consideration.
“I fear that it is a potentially dangerous situation for her to be in and feel strongly that she would be far safer in a female environment.
“While I understand it is a complex issue, the treatment of transgender individuals by the British judicial system is one that clearly requires greater attention and thought.
“The primary focus should be the safety and wellbeing of those involved.†– Daily Mirror
Tragic: Devon Staples' brother said he had not set the firework off intentionally.
A man died instantly after reportedly attempting to launch a firework from the top of his head while celebrating the Fourth of July.
Devon Staples, 22, had been drinking with friends in a rear garden when the apparent stunt went fatally wrong.
Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety in Calais, eastern Maine on the Canadian border, said Mr Staples had placed “a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off,” killing him instantly.
His brother Cody Staples saw the horrific incident from just five feet away.
He told the New York Daily Times it was a freak event and Devon had been holding a lighter which made it go off “by accident.”
He said: “I was the first one who got there. There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there.
“It was a freak accident. But Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh.”
Devon lived in Orlando, Florida, and worked as a dog walker and at Disney World playing characters from Disney classics.
Cody said: “He loved making people happy.
“Anyone who would want to give a tribute to Devon should go out and do something nice for someone. Show some love to someone you don’t know. That kid was all about showing people love.
“He was someone everyone should want to be like when they grow up. He was my younger brother and I looked up to him.”
A number of other firework injuries sustained during the celebration were also under investigation by fire marshals.
Burns and eye injuries happened at events in Friendship, Jefferson, Lebanon and Woodstock.
Devon’s death is the first fireworks fatality in Maine since the state legalised fireworks on January 1, 2012, local authorities said.
In 2011, politicians voted to repeal a 1949 law banning fireworks, reasoning the industry would create jobs and generate additional revenue.
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission 11 people died in fireworks-related accidents in 2014, while there were eight fatalities in 2013. – Mirror
KYLIE Minogue has revealed she is more than happy to date a man with “a bit of paunch” and feels her ex-boyfriends have all been “too good-looking”.
The 46 year old singer who dated her ‘Neighbours’ co-star Jason Donovan, musician Lenny Kravitz and actor Olivier Martinez in the past has confessed she would be happy to go out with slightly overweight guys and thinks her previous boyfriends may have been “too good looking”.
“I don’t mind grey hair, I don’t mind bald or balding. I don’t even mind a bit of a paunch. Maybe too good looking is where I’ve been going wrong!” she explained.
Despite her failed relationships, the ‘Locomotion’ hitmaker doesn’t count herself as “unlucky in love” and still has her heart set on settling down in the future.
“I’m putting it out there. I would like to find someone. I’m a romantic. I’m not conventional. I don’t think even as a kid I dreamed of a wedding day or a wedding dress but I do like being in love.
“I don’t see myself as unlucky in love as I’ve had a lot of really great relationships and I don’t have any regrets,” she said.
Meanwhile, the blonde beauty who is known for her pert posterior puts her enviable figure down to dancing around on stage.
“I think of it as something entirely separate to me. Probably the reason for it is the fact I’ve spent most of my adult life dancing around in very high heels,” she added. – Bernama
