Lars Von Trier

AS Lars von Trier started filming his new movie this week, the filmmaker announced at a press conference that he could be ready to step back from moviemaking. The Danish director, who claims to be too anxious on set, is considering ending his career as a director once “The House that Jack Built” is finished.

“I have so much anxiety. I think I’m getting too old for this […] I don’t think I can make any more films after this one,” he said at the event.

His upcoming movie, which is being filmed in Sweden and Denmark, follows a Washington serial killer over the course of 12 years in the 1970s and 1980s. Played by American actor Matt Dillon, Jack is described as a highly intelligent man who ends up taking more and more risks in order to accomplish the perfect crime. The cast includes Uma Thurman, who previously starred in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Swiss actor Bruno Ganz.

A Cannes comeback in 2018?

Perhaps more surprising was Lars von Trier’s suggestion that The House that Jack Built could screen at one of next year’s major film festivals, such as Cannes.

“I have talked to the people I know in Cannes and … yeah, maybe,” said the director.

Since his infamous Cannes press conference for Melancholia in 2011, the Danish director has been a persona non grata in the world of cinema. Known for his provocative nature, he explained that he “sympathised” with Hitler and declared himself a Nazi. Despite making a public apology the following day, the filmmaker didn’t manage to calm the scandal that saw him kicked out of the festival.

Relations between the Danish director and French film festival had previously been strong.

Since his early days in the 1980s, the filmmaker has made the Cannes selection nine times, and even won the festival’s top Palme d’Or prize in 2000 for Dancer in the Dark.

Three actresses have also won the “Prix d’interpr√©tation feminine” (Best Actress) award for roles in his movies: singer Bj√∂rk for Dancer in the Dark, American actress Kirsten Dunst for Melancholia and French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg for Antichrist.
